Jan Fulton, age 85 of Griffin passed away Saturday, May 18, 2024. Jan was born in Kyger, Ohio on October 9, 1938 and graduated from Ohio University as a mother of two children with a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1960. Her parents Walter Wallace and Pauline Athey Rif, husband, David Huber Fulton, and grandson, Colton Davis Chasteen all preceded her in death. Survivors include her children, Kathleen Sue Fendel (Dan) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Melissa Jayne Chasteen (Cary) of Griffin, Georgia, Stephen David Fulton of Clancy, Montana; grandchildren, Cara Lyn Hartly (Warren), James Fulton, Douglas James Maslen (Erika), Amanda Kay Conner (Chris), Lauren Elizabeth Henry (Nathan), Benjamin Stephen Fulton; great grandchildren, Jillian Athey Darden, Aleah Kay Chasteen, Skyler Grey Chasteen, Hazel Anne Henry, Violet Melody Henry, Russel Charles Maslen; Sister Christine Napier; nephew Dr. Kevin Napier (Alison); and three great nephews and niece and four great-great nephews and nieces.

Jan moved with her husband David and their children to a small farm on Rehoboth Road in June 1969 where she lived until her death. She was a teacher with the Griffin Spalding County School System duting the first several years in Griffin. Jan was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Pulaski Chapter, a charter member of the Indian Springs charpter of the Continental Society Daughters of the Indian Wars, and a member of John Alden Chapter of Colonial Dames 17th Century. A lifelong love of horses was expressed in trail riding and horse shows throughout her 55 years in Georgia.. With Jan's enthusiastic support, the entire family was deeply involved early on with the Flint River Saddle Club, 4-H and Regional Shows, and State, Regional, and National American Quarter Horse Association competitions. Jan became a world Champion in Level One Western Riding at the age of 79.

Jan's love for horses was expressed professionally by her daughter, Dr. Melissa Chasteen, through the Fulton Equine Clinic which she founded in the mid-1980's and operates adjacent to the family fram.

Jan had many extended family members and a very broad network of friends throughout the Quarter Horse Community across the Southeast.

Jan was an instrumental force in the establishment of the Horseman's Quarter Horse Association (HQHA in Georgia and served in various leadership capacities and remained as a Board Member until her death. The Association has funded a youth scholarship for several years and will now establish the Jan Fulton Memorial Youth Scholarship in her memory. In lieu of flower, donations to the HQHA Scholarship Fund will be accepted by the HQHA C/O Cross Ridge Ranch, 784 Porter Carswell Road, Waynesboro, GA 30830.

A visitation will be Monday, May 27th, 2024 from from 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home, followed by a funeral services in the chapel. A graveside Service will be held at the Gravel Hill Cemetery in Cheshire, Ohio at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024 with local assistance Birchfield Funeral Home, Rutland, Ohio.
