Joe Miller Bolin, 86, Rutland, OH, passed on from his earthly life on November 10, 2024 after a hard fought battle against cancer.

Born on September 20, 1938 in Middleport, OH to Helen Miller Bolin and Cecil Clayton Bolin, he was an only child who got an early education in meeting and interacting with the public in his parents' general store in Langsville, OH.

He married his wife of 68 years, Janet Turner Bolin, on June 2, 1956. As a young married couple they moved to Maryland while Joe served in the U.S. Navy. It was during this time Joe nearly lost his life when the aircraft in which he was an aircrewman crashed into the Bay of Placentia off the coast of Newfoundland on October 18, 1958. Although eleven crew members perished, Joe survived and he and Janet were blessed with two more children to add to the two they already had... Ricardo Lee, Brenda Jo, Brent Alan and Joseph Craig.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Ricardo Lee (Rick) Bolin and Joseph Craig (Craig) Bolin, and a granddaughter, Lindsay Bolin.

He is survived by his wife Janet; daughter Brenda (Fred Starner) Loper; son, Brent (Camille) Bolin; daughter-in-law, Brenda Bolin; grandchildren Derrick (Bethany) Bolin, Zack (Sonya) Bolin, Kyle Loper, Brook (Gabe) Jenkins, Josh (Breanna) Bolin, Clay (Michelle) Bolin, Holley (Derrick) Wilson, Adrian (Tyler Crawford) Bolin, Cameron (Catherine) Bolin, and Geneva Bolin. He was also blessed with 17 great grandchildren, at which he often expressed amazement.

He was always eager to hear stories about each of their accomplishments and the milestones they'd reached. A proud grandpa and great-grandpa, he enjoyed family gatherings and giving gifts to everyone.

Joe retired from Conrail as a locomotive engineer.

Joe was a 32 Mason and member of the Harrisonville Masonic Lodge. He and Janet were longtime members of Star Grange Hall.

Joe's life was a life of public service. He served on the Meigs County Community Improvement Corporation, the state Clean Ohio Board, the Buckeye Hills Resource Conservation and Development Council, and numerous other boards and committees in the county.

An avid supporter and promoter of conservation in the state of Ohio, Joe completed 30 years of service to the Meigs Soil and Water Conservation District. He spearheaded the creation of the 174-acre Meigs SWCD Conservation Area on New Lima Road, Rutland in 2002.

Joe also worked diligently for his township of Rutland for 28 years as a township trustee. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and was proud to witness his love of hunting passed down through three generations.

Joe went out on a high note as he accepted Christ as Lord and Savior of his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Meigs Soil and Water Conservation District for the upkeep of the New Lima Road Conservation Area would continue to honor Joe and his dedication to conservation.

Joe's services are Friday, November 15, 2024 at 11 am at the Bradford Church of Christ, Pomeroy, OH, with Pastor Daniel Roush officiating. Burial to follow at Miles Cemetery, Rutland, OH. The family will receive friends at the Bradford Church of Christ, fellowship hall from 5 pm to 8 pm Thursday, November 14, 2024. Birchfield Funeral Home, Rutland, OH is helping the Bolin family. Just wanted to share my thoughts of Joe. He was as close to a best friend that my Dad, Bob Daniels had. I remember Joe all the way back to Troop 249, and camping at Camp Kiashuta. Nothing like going to Joe and Janet's house and throwing a few bales of hay...Little did I know, a few bales equaled 75 to 100 bales. Joe and Janet raised a great family, because they were great people themselves. Prayers for the Bolin family. They have endured hardship before, and they will get through this horrible loss. Here's hoping Joe's smile alone will get him through the pearly gates!

We send our deepest condolences to the family. We had the pleasure of meeting Joe 2 years ago. Joe talked to use about his years of being on the board of Rutland Township. He encouraged me to work hard but most of all to enjoy what I did as an employee for The Rutland. Township. Thank you Joe for being a friend to me and my wife. She enjoyed just sitting on the porch talking with you. Rest High my friend

I have known Joe all of my adult life and meeting him the first time I felt like I knew him all my life. He is one of fifteen board members of the Meigs CIC and always one of my favorites. He will be missed by so many. Janet was always the love of his life and that showed in so many ways. I do know from the board meetings he would take her a pastry and coffee from McDonald's because it is her favorite. God gained a very good man.

The first time I met Joe was when I joined 249 as a assistent scout master 1980. My first camp out with the troup was at Kiashuta . I pulled in that night and it was 20 degrees out and there was thiss guy in bib over alls and a flanel shirt spliting wood wearing nothing else. I thought this is a one tuff scout troop. Later learned that tuff man man was Joe
